My husband has Alzheimer's. He loves dogs, but I think I am not able to cope with getting a dog and taking care of Henry. We have had three dogs in the past, and when we go for walks Henry loves to pet dogs. I think there are places where you can rent a dog for a few hours or half a day. What do you think of this idea?

Hi Erika,
There actually is such a thing in LA called Flex Pet http://www.flexpetz.com/location.html however it looks very expensive and a little over the top. I wonder with all the folks who have dogs and have to work full time if you could find someone in your neighborhood with a dog who would love to be walked during the day. You might be able to put an ad on Craig's list. I know I have many clients that would jump at the chance to have someone walk and love their dog while they were at work. Many people pay large amounts of money to a dog sitter for this. Here is the link to the pet's section of Craig's list for LA http://losangeles.craigslist.org/pas/
If you were closer you could come and walk Mel:-)
I remember one dog I was treating, back when I did western medicine, who came in with a young mother, her son, and an older man. It turned out it was the woman's dog but the man was her neighbor who no longer worked. She worked all day and he was retired and lonely so the dog went and hung out with him during part of the day while the woman was at work. Everyone ended up winning because the man got to be with a dog although he probably could not have done all the care on his own and the dog got to hang out with someone who loved him during the day.
You might also be able to volunteer to walk and play with dogs at the local shelter. We had a large number of volunteers at the shelter I worked at who did this. They made a large difference in those dog's lives.
Hope this helps!
