Making crazy awesome homemade cat food

This afternoon I whipped up a batch of my homemade cat food for our four kitties. I serve it raw so it is pretty easy to throw together and a lot of fun to make. It feels like making cookies, only these kids like meat cookies and are much happier eating it as raw cookie dough.

Here’s my recipe if you want to try it at home

Make sure the meat has been frozen for at least 48 hours at some point. I buy my meat frozen.

Raven knows I'm making food for him

Can we have some too?

Eight pounds of free range ground turkey

A dozen free range eggs

Yum! Sweet Potato

All set for the freezer and fridge. This will last our kitties about a week. I freeze half of it and refrigerator the other half.

The best part - licking the cookie bowl!

Mom, the girls are hogging the bowl!

Got here via an internet search for stomatitis and linked from your post on that to this recipe. One of our cats has just been diagnosed (poor baby) and I’ve been thinking about how to feed him post-extraction. We’ll try this out. He’s on antibiotics right now, which I think are helping him with the pain, but that is a temporary solution.

    Hi Jennifer,
I’m glad you found us and I hope he does well post extraction. If he does better with antibiotics there is a better change that extraction will help in my experience, esp if he hasn’t needed steroids. You might want to consider trying him on this food now so it isn’t something new right after surgery. You may have to mix it with a canned food he likes if he hasn’t been on raw before as some cats aren’t sure what to think of it at first.
    best wishes,
    Lena

Hi, I have an overweight cat who I also give Purina One for UTI, is this home made recipe good for both? And I have another dumb question for you, what about parasites in raw food or raw eggs? Just curious, thanks for your help.

    Hi Paula,
This recipe and its follow up, http://pathwithpaws.com/blog/2012/05/20/making-crazy-awesome-cat-food-part-two/ ,should both be good for weight loss and urinary health. No parasites in eggs. I always recommend freezing the food for at least 48 hrs to kill off any parasites in the meat. If the meat has previously been frozen you are also good.
    best wishes,
    Lena

I am confused about your first recipe—6 pounds of meat doesn’t equal 1 1/2 cups as far as I can tell.

Thanks for pointing that out Karl. I originally had a smaller recipe in this post and then went through and changed amounts to make a larger batch however the original 1 1/2 cup did not get erased. I removed it so it is just by weight – hard to measure in cups when you are buying meat:-)
