Last night one of my older dogs who I believe has dementia stepped on one of my other younger dogs. the younger dog just lay there and did not yelp or move and I know the older dog is heavy. We had to to lift the old dog off and he was not really aware of what he was doing but the incidence has left me thinking that the smaller one has no sense of pain. He is one of litter of pups we kept because the mother was not 100% healthy having an incomplete spine amongst other issues. He is a strange animal having a very flacid tail and is not the sharpest of brains. I do not suppose there is anything I can do but just want to know if there is anyone else who has similar experience please.

It might be worth getting a neuro consult with a neurologist to see if there is something that can be done, if it is a lack of pain issue or if something else is going on. It may be that there is nothing that can be done if it is genetic and mom had similar issues.

the mom does have neuro issues indeed, she has fits and seizures regularly. She was not meant to live too long according to the vet who first saw her but 4 years on she is still here and is as fiesty as ever – although clearly a special needs case. I reckon you are right she has passed on issues to her boy and most people do not chose to keep a dog with problems but that is not me.
